    Pay for a Access Programmer

    Hello friends,

I work in New Jersey and I just got a new boss and he told me that an access programmer is only worth $20 an hour? is this true? I currently write programs in Access and Excel and make $24.50 an hour. He told me that I am overpaid. Am I getting below what I should be getting, equal, or above?

    Plz Rply,

    Thanks

It Depends on where you work and which organization you r working for. Most consultant Access developers would likely be on a $25 to $100 an hour (depending on your qualifications and the actual need of the organization who is hiring). The problem with most Access developer positions are that they are contract work. So, once you're done you have to find the next one. It can be lucrative, but it also can be sparse and you might need to move around a lot and go where the jobs are.

As for a permanent position, it is likely that $15 - $35 an hour is probably going to be the range (there are exceptions of course) but that doesn't take into account benefits that you might have where the contract worker doesn't get those.

    Hi Jesika,

Most companies that would HIRE a person to do programming like this do so as an entry level position. That is why the pay scale is lower than you expect.
As a contract position the rate can and will be much higher.
Take for example the temp agencies that staff places like H&R Block during tax season. The agency can charge a higher rate for the temp because the employer knows that: A. when the job is done the temp can be let go without the employer being obligated to contribute to the unemployment benefits. B. during the employment the employer is not obligated to pay any benefits to the temp.
If I were in your position I would simply look for ways to do side work as a contract programmer to supplement the meager wages you are being paid. By doing so, if your boss decides to downsize by eliminating the higher paid employees and hiring some kids fresh from school, you will have some contacts in the business with which to continue earning some income.

It seems to me that your new boss feels that he could get the work done cheaper, but he may find that while someone else can do the job for a lower wage, it may take that person longer to do something that you have experience with.
As long as your are in there doing your job I am relatively sure he cannot just fire you. He certainly can hire others to do your job, and he can then move you to a different position, but he cannot reduce your pay.

IMHO, let him think what he wants to. Right now is NOT a good time to be looking for work in your industry. I have on staff here a young man working as a computer tech. He goes out to eradicate viruses, solving printer issues, resets passwords, etc. He holds a Masters degree in Information Technology from Drexel Univ., and this was the best work he could find after Circuit City closed, where he worked as a bench tech in customer service.

Meanwhile, look for other ways to supplement your income, in case the boss goes off the deep end.
