Macros not recording...please help

Hi all, I'm new here. I'm just starting to learn excel by videos. I've just started the macros section but my excel doesn't seem to record macros. I press record, make some font and formatting changes and then press stop. I select a new cell, go to macros, select the maco and press enter..nothing happens. When I go to edit the macro there is no code in the macro, just it's name. I don't have the relative reference button pushed.
I know this is probably a newbie question for you, but I'm just getting started and this is frustrating.

Excel Version: Excel for Mac 2011
OS: 10.7.4 Lion

Actually it started working this morning. I was saving them to the workbook that I was working on, not my personal workbook. Well it seems to have resolved itself after turning on and off the computer. I'll come back if it happens again. Thanks for your help.
