    Deleting Columns during an import

I have a large CSV file that has 256 columns, and lots of data. I only need 1 column out of the 256 that there is, so I would like to know if there is anyway to delete fields during the import. I have tried checking the "Do not import field (skip)" checkbox, but that doesn't work. I have also gone into the advanced tab, highlighted every field, and deleted them...this also didn't work. I cannot simply just open the csv in excel to delete the fields because the file is too big for excel.

Why doesn't the skip import field work? It works on any csv file that I try.

Can you spell out the exact steps you are taking.

I click on the advanced tab, and then I check every skip box except for the field that contains the email address. I then get to the end and I get an error that says "The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data."

    Hi,.

Upload the csv file you are trying to upload so that we can see the problem in context. It's because you're trying to enter >255 characters in a cell.

Unfortunately I cannot upload this file due to the confidential data it has in it. Just so I understand, It's not that there is greater than 255 columns/fields, it's that there is a cell in a field that contains more than 255 characters in it? If that's the case then the skip function is working properly, and I was just confused with the error?

On re-reading this I'm confused. You say that you've tried the Advanced Tab highlighted fields and deleted them (or perhaps not since you also say that did not owrk). Either way you' seem to be saying that you've imported the data. Yet in your last comment you say you can't open the csv because the file is too big.

Can we go back to basics and test whether you are able to import the file with just one field. Import the files using the wizard accepting the delimited by comma option and tick the box to skip every field apart from the fist. Then finalise the import. Does the import bring in that first field?

I think the problem is the 256th column. I believe that Excel won't allow you to import more than 255 columns. Is it not possible to ask the system that produces the file to limit its output to the single field you DO want, or at least to 255 columns?
