    Freight Rate Repository

Does anyone have a Freight Rate Repository Template they are willing to share? I am looking for a file where one can insert origin/destination, weight and dimensions, and based on freight rates that are loaded into an Excel database, it will show the cost for that origin/destination pair.

    Re: Freight Rate Repository

Without a sample workbook, the best I can do is outline how I would do it.

You obviously have a table of cities and the cost between cities. I can envision this table being in one of two formats:

    Houston - Dallas - rate
    Houston - Brownsville - rate
Houston - San Antonito - rate
    etc.

Or have a bunch of cities going down the rows and the same cities going across the columns and the rates being at the intersection.

This would impact the design of the lookup. In the first, you would need a helper cell to combine the origin and destination. In the second you can use Match Index. In the first, you would enter the origin and destination and make a combined key out of them and look up based on that key.

Then there is the matter of data validation. That is you would have to come up with a list of unique city names to use in dropdown lists. Pivot tables may come in handy to get the list.

Then what? After you get the cities and the rates, what will you do with them?
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

    Re: Freight Rate Repository

    Hi All,

I am working on a very similar quote tool, offering only interstate pallet services to our customers removes some complexity from what a standard rate calculator would as we have flat rates to set destinations and charge a p/pallet rate. I have used data validation but, I cannot get the "selected" destination in the drop down to reference the rate for that transit lane.

    Any tip's?

    Thanks,
