    Front end Back end database

    Dear all,

    Currently i have one Access database. Users send information from Excel to the Access Database by pushing on a button once they are ready with their task. There is also a connection that works the other way around i.e. a table is being imported in Excel from Access (user information.)

    Problem:
    I want to work on the database (design view, creating forms etc. ) while users still being able to work in Excel. This results in a problem: the database is open in design view while Excel is trying to import from the database.

    Solution:
    I should create a front end and a back end. But: excel pushes the information to the database named xxx.mdb. If i create a back end the name will be xxx-be.mdb. Will the connection fail after splitting the database?

    Re: Front end Back end database

    Make a copy of the front end. Do all of the work you need to designing it. When finished replace the original with your newly designed front end.

    I have multiple users and assign a different front end for each user naming them Version #1, Version #2, etc.

    This system seems to work well.

    Remember to always make a backup of any work that you do in case you need to revert back.

    Good luck with your project.

    @Billy

    First of all, thank you for the response. If I understand you correctly I should follow the following steps:
    1. Split the database. The splitted database will not results in connection errors i.e. Excel users still are begin to parse information to the
    back end
    2. Make a copy of the front end
    3. Do all the work needed;
    4. Replace front end.

    Please note, there are currently no other users than me using the front end.

    Correct but make backups of the backend so you don't lose your data. Remember all the data is kept in the backend. The front ends are for reports and data entry.
