    Question Layering Charts

Working to make a speedometer for the purpose of progress tracking. Doing so requires creating and overlapping two charts - a doughnut and a pie. The pie chart needs to be placed atop the doughnut to have the needle cut all the way through the chart to show value.

Issue: Whenever I intend to place the doughnut behind the pie chart (either send doughnut to back or bring pie to front) using Chart Tools < Format the buttons to do so are greyed out. Thoughts?

Please let me know if the question isn't clear.

    Thanks so much,
    Perr

    Re: Layering Charts

Try right clicking chart and use the Send Forward/Backward choices.

Or ALT+F10 to display Selection and Visibility task pane, where you can change the z-order.

Or better yet why not use 1 chart which is a combination donut/pie?

    Re: Layering Charts

Send Forward/Backward choices are not available when I right click on the chart - thoughts?

To clarify, I beleive that using 1 chart that is a combination of donut/pie is exactly what I've done (when I open the Selection and Visability task pane, only one shape/chart is shown). So, working from this clarification, how would I "layer" the pie over the doughnut?

    Thanks for your help.

Well if you only have 1 chart object then yes the options to change it's z-order what probably be grayed out.

If you have a combination chart you should have the series to use as pie on the secondary axis

Could you break down that second piece a bit more for me? What series to I need and where's it found?

    Thanks,
    Perr

    Re: Layering Charts

?? What is plot series on/off. Are you using xl2013?

I was suggesting you select the series that is being used for the needle on the gauge, the pie chart. And via the Format dialog move the series to the secondary axis.
