Question Trouble selecting correct data for bubble charts.

Hello everyone, I was wondering whether anybody could offer some help with bubble charts. I have attached a file with example data (and my failed bubble chart).

    I am trying to get:
    - A linear time x axis with bubbles at the correct given date (to show reverse distance in time from the origin, which should be =today)
    - A y axis that reflects the "RAG Rating", with 10 being closest to the origin
    - Bubble size to reflect the "CT Rating" column, where 10 is the biggest bubble
    - Bubble labels that would contain the columns for name and contact title

Is there any way to do this easily in excel? The only helpful post I have found online so far is one that calls for VBA programming, which I'm not familiar with at all.

The problem is, I would like to do this for different companies with different amounts of bubbles, so I'm not sure how to make it scale either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance,

    MC

Re: Trouble selecting correct data for bubble charts.

Your data is laid out as z,x,y. By default, Excel expects data for a bubble chart to be laid out as x,y,z. One way to fix this is to arrange the data the way Excel expects -- move or copy column E over to column H, then build the chart based on columns F:H. If you don't want to rearrange the data in the spreadsheet, you can edit the data series to explicitly tell Excel which columns to use for which quantity: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...spx?CTT=1#BM3b

    - A linear time x axis with bubbles at the correct given date (to show reverse distance in time from the origin, which should be =today)
    - A y axis that reflects the "RAG Rating", with 10 being closest to the origin
I think the main thing to notice here is that it sounds like you want the axes in reverse order (maximum axis values near the lower left corner). This should be easy to accomplish by selecting the "values in reverse order" checkbox in the axis options dialog: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...in=HP010007448

    - Bubble labels that would contain the columns for name and contact
Perhaps the easiest way to label the data points is using Rob bovey's XY chart labeler add-in (appspro.com ).

    Thank you very much!
The x,y,z made me understand, so after some tinkering I got the hang of how manually inputting data works.
I now managed to make separate series to make the bubbles conditionally formatted too, which is a plus.
Also, the add-in you pointed me to is super useful!
    Thank you very much again!
