How to compare and chart due date verses date received using Pivot Table/Pivot Charts

I have a 4000 row spreadsheet and each row contains a date due column and a date received column.

Title Dept Date Due Date Received
    Report 1 HR 3/23/2014 2/15/2014
    Report 2 TR 4/15/2015
    Report 3 BR 12/31/2014 1/15/2015
    Report 4 CH 6/1/2016

There is always a date in the date due column and sometimes a date in the date received column. I need to automate the process to supply graphs of the data showing how many reports were due for the month verses how many were received by each department. I also need a running total by month for each department. I have no problem using pivot tables and pivot charts to show the data for date due by department and date received by department. My tables and charts don't work when I try to show both date due and date received. I can do it manually, but I need this process to automatically update so a manual solution isn't going to work. I'm attaching an example spreadsheet and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You don't necessarily need PTs to automate this process, but it's hard to tell how your data should look since the example you attached is limited. Take a look at the attached workbook. It is automated to return values based on the current month of today's date. This can be altered to show historical records as well. From here, you can create a graph of the data as needed.

Re: How to compare and chart due date verses date received using Pivot Table/Pivot Charts

Thanks for the suggestion. I added more data to the example spreadsheet and created a couple of pivot tables and charts to help explain my issue. I also turned the spreadsheet into a table so the pivot data will automatically grow as new data is placed into the spreadsheet. I am having problems with two items. First, when I use the "show values" command it starts over summing the data at the start of a new year. Second, when I try to combine pivot date due and pivot date received, it doesn't show the data correctly. I also attached a spreadsheet that shows the manual graphing method that I am trying to replace with the automated method.

Hopefully this explains my question better.
