Nice to see that this is what you were looking for..
You can simple add "Rectangle" shapes by going in Insert-->Shapes.

And moving to your next question...you can simple change the color by doing right click on "Plot Area" box and the below Plot Area will get populated may be right side on your window.

No Its not dumb question...This is the best platform to exchange knowledge with each other sitting at different places.
Click on any graph and from plot area option or using "fill color" option you can change the color of the bar.

You might find you have better control if you use a few dummy data series to shade the plot area.
3 area chart series on secondary axis.
