How to set data source for pivot table permenant even if file name or path changed

    Hi,

I am having the same probem described below; unfortunately, there is no resolution to it.

    http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/excel-q...-workbook.html

Whenever I modify the name/location of the file, the pivot linkage remains to the old data source. Here are some screens:

    Thanks,

    Mike

The question you linked to was about a pivot table with the data source in the same file. Is your data source in the same file as the pivot table or not? That part is not clear. If it is in the same workbook, remove the workbook name from the reference, so you just use the table name.

Thank you for the reply, teylyn.
Yes, the data source is in the same file. I think that the problem is linked to the fact that the data source is in table or range format. I also tried removing the table and it seemed to work. the problem is that I need the table formatting, as it helps me process the document easier and faster.
I tried that prior to posting. It works for the moment, but after reopening the document, the result is the same - the old workbook name still appears in the reference.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    This does not make sense.

A pivot table source reference to a table in the same workbook will survive a file renaming. That has never been a problem.

Post the file that does NOT do that.

I can't see a file with your link. I am prompted to sign up to some service that I don't want.

This forum offers the ability to upload files.

Please use that facility. Click "Go Advanced" below and then the paper clip icon to post a file.

I don't like the spam and the ads and the other noise of "free" file sharing sites.

The Pivot Table in your file explicitly references

    Book7.xlsx!Budget

    Remove the

    Book7.xlsx!

from the data source, so the pivot table will reference the Budget table in the CURRENT file.

    See attached file.

Yes, it helps for the moment, but as soon as I save it with a different name, the new file is linked to the old source.

It does not do that on my machine. I cannot reproduce that problem.

I also added a screen with all the steps that I'm performing, in case it is of any help:

    1) update the source to the table name (without the worbook name)
    2) save as a different version
    3) close.
    4) When I re-open the workbook, it's linked to the old one.

    Thank you for the replies!

Thanks for the screenshots, but it does not do this on my computer. I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer for you.
