Post Creating a chart using non numerical data

    Hello
Is there anyway to create a chart (preferably a pie chart - but not essential) to display percentages / numbers of non-numerical data?

For example, I have a list of months, and we want to know percentages of how many are of each month

    Is that possible?

    Thank you

The easiest way would be to create a Pivot Table and from there a Pivot Chart

BTW have a look on the Net about disadvantages of pie charts

Thanks Pepe, I've tried that and it doesn't work because there is nothing numerical?? I'm a bit confused....

FYI - it isn't actually months we're using, that was just an easier 'example' to explain... its a list of categories (words, NOT numbers) that we need to be able to visually see how many are in one category compared to another.....

In your Pivot Table use the months/words as row fields and use Count

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

Here is the pivot table/chart Pepe Le Mokko described.

You have too many items to make a sensible pie so use a bar chart instead.

You'll find Pivot Table basics at http://www.contextures.com/CreatePivotTable.html

As for charts, select any cell in the PT and hit F11. This gives you the default chart

Or have a look at Andy's site http://www.andypope.info/charts.htm

How about this formula based version? As its set up, it should be able to handle up to 25 unique categories, but quite easy to adapt to handle more.

The chart also adapts to how many unique values exist in the current dataset. Try changing a single instance of 'Major Builder' in column A to 'Major Builder 2'.

    Unique or distinct values?
