I have been trying to group this data in quarters, I have used month, and a day column to group but neither of the them work. I keep getting error saying cannot group this selection. I have no blank rows, all the data matches and i have also changed the day to read it as a date and it still doesn't work. Someone please help.

after looking at the file, the 1-1 is not an XL date (IE: a number). I have added a column and used DATEVALUE to convert the 1-1 to a real XL date. Then I created a new pivot table and I was able to group by anything I wanted. I think the real issue is, I believe, that you can only group REAL XL dates. To determine if the date is a real XL date, choose an empty cell and use ISNUMBER to determine if it really is a number. You can right click and check the format to see also....

Create a Date helper column by using the formula given below.....
Now drop that Date helper column in the row area and group the dates as per your requirement.
