Trying to chart dates values by count

Hey all I have a dataset with termination dates of employees. I want to line graph this across time to see if there are any trends. I thought I could create the graph whereby dates are counts and the axis would also be dates but the dates would group by month-year. Obviously it didn't do this (or at least I couldn't figure out how to get it to). I then tried converting it with VALUE() "mmm-yy" but this alphabetized the x-axis. I then tried MONTH()&"-"&YEAR() but this also didn't work. Any help would be great.working.xlsx

Your period column converts the date value in column 1 to a text string. When Excel plots those text strings, all it can do is treat them as text -- it can no longer recognize them as "dates".

The other possible complication is that you are working with a pivot table/pivot chart. Pivot charts have certain limitations, including they are forbidden from using date x axes.

I am not at all good with pivot tables, so someone else will need to help you with that. I think the solution to your problem is to get the pivot table to use real date values to get the counts. Then, you can use the strategy here: http://peltiertech.com/regular-chart...-pivot-tables/ to make a regular chart from the pivot table report.
