need to group by date and chart each day

I'm not having luck with getting a chart to do what I want and would appreciate any help.

The attached workbook file has a sample of the data and the formula that allows a date range to be entered and then totals the values for that range. This is great for checking specific days.

What I want is a chart that totals each days values for all days available. This needs to be done without entering in a date range manually. Would like to do something like that looks like this . . .

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello,

what you describe can be achieved with a pivot chart. I use Excel for Windows. The following instructions may need to be adjusted to a Mac version.

First you need to prepare your data.

Add headings to each column. In your sample file, I suggest adding the column titles "Value", "Date" and "Time" to cells I3 to K3. (by the way, having AM and PM in a different column does not do much for data quality. You may want to include that in the time column and format the time column to show AM and PM).

Next, turn the data into a table: select the data from I3 to K15 and then use Insert > Table. This will make the header rows into headers.

Now, click any cell in the table and select Insert > Pivot Chart.

In the Pivot panel, drag "Date" into the X axis (Categories) panel. Then drag "Value" into the Values panel. Change the chart type to a line chart.

You will now see a line chart with the dates on the X axis and the total values for each day plotted in a line. See attached.

Re: need to group by date and chart each day

    Hey Teylyn,

That is very helpful and a nice tutoring session. Playing with this to understand better I end up with couple other questions.

I can add a line of data with a new date and it updates into the pivot values - but it doesn't update into the line chart. Even adding data with existing dates does not update into the line chart although the pivot data does update.when refreshed.
Also, the line chart has the day/month transposed.

Why is the chart not showing changes when the pivot data has been updated?
How are the dates in the chart fixed so the day/month is in the same order as referenced data?

Really appreciate you taking the time to show the steps. Very helpful.
