    Question Disc Golf Flight Chart

First off this is my first post on this forum so hopefully im doing this right.

Im looking to create a line chart representing a disc golf flight, there is 4 numbers to a disc golf flight 1.Speed 1-14 2.Glide 1-7 3.Turn +1--5 4.Fade 0-5. im looking for this chart to basically plot those numbers out when ever i enter numbers in those ranges for each. What is going to be my best way to begin to tackle this job?

If you are unfamiliar with creating charts in Excel, I would probably suggest starting with something like this: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...reatelinechart Work through the example in the help file so you can see the basic steps and commands to creating a line chart. Pay particular attention to how they have arranged the data in the spreadsheet (categories in the leftmost column, data in adjacent columns to the right). Most times, proper arrangement of the data in the spreadsheet makes all the difference in easily creating the chart.

Thanks for the reply, i have read that before and am pretty familiar with charts and data arrangement, i just cant get that fourth data to work right, im shooting for a result like the included attachment.download.png

    Re: Disc Golf Flight Chart

1st question: Is this a line chart or a scatter chart? It looks more like scatter chart ("East-West" distance is along the X axis, "North-South" distance along the Y axis) than a line chart. Sometimes "precision of language" (Lois Lowry in "The Giver") is important.

I note that your original list of data did not include any mention of distance, though I expect the basic idea is -- given these "parameters", you can compute the (X,Y) coordinates along the trajectory of the disc from whatever equations you are using. Here's an overview of how I would expect to create a chart like this:

    1) Enter input parameters
    2) Compute a table of X,Y points along the trajectory from the input parameters and the equations that describe the trajectory.
    3) Plot the table on an XY scatter plot.
    4) Make copies of this for each trajectory to be plotted. If you were careful about the formulas in step 2, then this should be a simple copy/paste operation.
    5) Add these copies to the chart as new series (See "Select Data" dialog in the Chart->Design tab).

I'm not sure what you mean by not getting the fourth data to work right. Can you explain your problem in more detail? Is it really about creating the chart, or is it more about how to compute the trajectory?

Ok well clearly im way out of my league on this one, i was thinking it would be more simpler than this, probably going to try and find a pre-made or something because i cant git it to even come close to looking right

    Re: Disc Golf Flight Chart

I'm sorry that we cannot help more -- probably because this particular problem is not one any of us have tackled. It looks like an interesting problem. I put "equations to describe flying disc trajectory" into Yahoo and returned a few interesting results.
A paper by Morrison that includes Java code (using Euler's method for solving differential equations) to solve the problem.
A paper by Baumback that critiques Morrison's paper and attempts to implement a similar Euler's method in Excel for solving this problem.
A paper by Crowther and Potts that describes a 6 parameter mathematical model for describing Frisbee flight (this paper may not be free to you).

If you are having trouble with the computations, these and other resources might be useful in understanding how these computations are performed. Once you understand the computations, I expect that creating the charts should be easy.
