    Need nominal data indication

    I have a simple chart (one data column) where I need to show data outside of a set area. If I have a chart with values from 1 to 100, I want to highlight those chart values that range from 45-62 or some other values.

    I'm not picky about the exact method, just so you can look at the chart and see what's outside of the acceptable range.

    Here are some ideas:
    -[Bar chart] the bar with values outside the acceptable area can be red while acceptable values can be green
    - The chart can be shaded above and below the acceptable area
    - A line set to the color of my choosing for the acceptable high and low values

    Thanks!

    You really should decide the exact method, based on your data and how you want to present it. Whether you use line, bar, etc., depends on what your data means. We can certainly make a recommendation, but to do so we would need to understand more about the nature of your data.

    Also, you need to provide a file with sample data.

    For most solutions, you will almost certainly have to create a second column using formulas to select the data outside the desired range to be highlighted. It may also require a third column showing the data that is within the range.

    If you use a line chart, you can plot the second column using no line and with markers that are large empty circles that would appear to circle the points outside the range.

    If you use a column chart you would need the third column so you could plot the normal points in one color and the other points in another color. I would use a stacked bar chart for that.

    You can plot range limit lines horizontally to show the upper and lower limits, but I'm not sure how you would apply shading to those (although it might be possible).

    The first recommendation for "conditional formatting" of chart data is something like this: http://peltiertech.com/conditional-f...-excel-charts/ As Jeff indicates, this is more about formulas in the spreadsheet rather than the chart itself. http://peltiertech.com/conditional-f...-excel-charts/

    @6StringJazzer,

    I have made a sample of data in the below file and how I "solved" it (very poorly, so far).

    @MrShorty,

    Thank you for this, I think this will be a good start of what I am looking to do. While I already do this kind of data separation in another spreadsheet, I never applied it to a chart.

    Because this is an on-going data collection and while I need to retain all data, I only need to see recent data. So I have a table that collects the last 20 days of data that I build the cart from.

    Re: Need nominal data indication

    Here is a revision to your file that circles the points that are out of range. I converted the chart to a Scatter Plot with connecting lines. Then I added a column with Out Of Range values and plotted that as an additional series. Then I formatted it to have no line, and large markers with no fill.

    Again, without knowing more about your data I can't say whether a line chart if the best way to depict it. Are you trying to show a trend over time? Or distribution of random samples? Or something else?

    @6StringJazzer,

    What you have is very good. It's showing my blood sugar levels for a given meal. Thank you!

    Re: Need nominal data indication

    So this is a little like a statistical process control chart. You want to tune your process so that values fall within the given range. You would see a time trend with this type of chart, which is probably useful. This is better than a bar/column chart for this type of data. You are not doing distribution analysis of a variable over a population so you don't need a frequency plot.
