Pivot Table missing filter drop down for Row Fields

I am working in Excel 2013, building a pivot table with multiple fields in the rows. My first first always has the automatic filter drop down so I can sort by A-Z, highest to lowest etc. at the top. When I place additional fields in my rows, this option is not made available automatically. I know it is possible, being as I have seen it before in a pivot. Please note, I have already selected "Display field captions and filter drop downs" in my Pivot Table options. This did not resolve the issue.

Re: Pivot Table missing filter drop down for Row Fields

    Hi Lora2014,

Can you explain this again step by step?

    What I understand from your post is;

Of the 4 Areas to add fields into the Pivot table (Filters, Rows, Columns, Values), you have several fields in the Rows Area.

Then your 'First first' ?? has a drop down filter ...

To get help with your problem, explain the issue clearly & proof read your post before you post it.

Get back me with the clear issue & I'll try to help.

    Cheers

Re: Pivot Table missing filter drop down for Row Fields

Your recap is correct. The first listed field in the Rows area has the drop down that is working. The fields below that in the rows area (second, third item etc.) do not have this same option.

The attached photo has a small example of what I am trying to achieve. In this case the the Main and SUB field would both be listed in the Rows, with the Main being first. Both have the the filter drop down functionality. When trying to build this from scratch, I am unable to get the SUB field to have the drop down like seen in this picture.

I suggest you attach a copy of your workbook. It's much easier to find a solution that way.

If you attach a sample of your workbook it will be easier to find a solution. Remember to remove/replace sensitive data before uploading the file. Look here if you need help with attachments:

    Hi,

It appears, from your description, that your current pivot table is in outline layout. You can change it to tabular layout on the Design tab of the PivotTable Tools group and then you will see one filter per field. You can, in fact, filter each field using outline layout- you simply need to select an item in the field you wish to filter before clicking the filter dropdown.

Thank you, this was the solution!

Re: Pivot Table missing filter drop down for Row Fields

I just discovered an alternative solution to the one already provided about switching to tabular... let's say you have 2 fields for grouping in rows, "State" and "Product".

And you can see the filter drop down for state (because it is your parent row). And you choose a few states, so now only 3 states of 50 are showing. And you still have all your products showing.... but you only want a few specific products instead of 100 products...

If you select a cell in the "Products" column (rows), and then click the same "state" drop down box... (which still looks like it will give you "state" drop down choices...) it will now show filter box for "products", not "state".

If you click back in the state column and choose the exact same filter box, it will now show "state" filter box.
I literally just figured this out 5 minutes ago after using pivots for 20 years.

FYI, that is what I meant when I said
