Scatter Graph with Interactivity - Possible in Excel 2010? VBA?

I am not great on the creation of graphs and charts, so here goes!

I have been asked to find out if the type of graph attached is possible to create from data in Excel. This is just a speculative query: apologies for the poor quality of the attachment, but I hope it shows what is required (more or less). If this sort of graph is possible to achieve, is it then possible to make it interactive, in other words, hover over any of the data points to see the name of the pupil represented by that point? I expect this bit at least would require some VBA. Any comments gratefully received: as I have said, this is not a project at the moment, but we are just seeing if what we are aiming for is possible.

I am optimistic that much of what you want could be accomplished.

The chart itself looks like basic scatter/dot plot with 4 data series (girls, boys, unknown, trendline) and a vertical category/text axis. This page shows one way of doing this, with a link to a second approach: http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/Y_CategoryAxis.html

Getting the names to appear on mouse over would be more difficult. I usually simply have all data labels displayed using Rob Bovey's XY chart labeler add-in (free download from appspro.com). Displaying the name only when pointing will probably involve some type of mouse event. You might review this page to see how to use chart events http://peltiertech.com/chart-events-microsoft-excel/ , then tinker with the MouseMove or other event to see what happens.
