    The Alt-D-P-F Shortcut

Is there a difference in creating a pivot table by selecting your dataset (in a worksheet), then using the shortcut Alt-D-P-F versus the traditional clicking on the insert tab, then on the Pivot icon and proceeding from there. The reason i ask, is because i was walking a colleague thru the creation of a pivot table, i used the alt shortcut, he went traditional. Surprisingly i was able to create a calculated item, when he was not. I tested both methods again on my worksheet and came to the same results.

The shortcut opens the Pivot Table Wizard, does this apply some sorta magic vs the traditional clicking..

Definately a difference there, we access our SQL database through a pivot table in Excel and cannot use custom fields.

I use the Wizard to create a pivot of that so I can insert calculated fields etc. I'm sure it does the same thing if you're just looking at a table. But if you want to make a pivot table off a pivot table then the Wizard is the tool you need.

    Hi,

I would presume that your options are set to prefer the Data Model when creating pivot tables. If so, unless you uncheck that option when using the Insert-> Pivot Table method, you will not be able to create a calculated item. The old Pivot Table Wizard has no such option and will not add the data to the data model- unless it already was added through the other method.

I'm wondering if caching has anything to do with it. I found this article earlier this afternoon

Also, of course, you can only insert a calculated item if you currently have an item cell selected in a row or column field.
