    Project Milestones Development Time tracking

    Hello everybody,

I'm currently looking for some help on how to track the project development time according to certain milestones. I found already good charts and templates, but i noticed that none of those provided include functions that can help to track whether the project is on time or delayed: for example if i want to check at different intervals of completion (25%, 50%, 90%) whether the work is going as planned, i have difficulties to figure out a proper way to structure the excel.

I wonder if anybody have had some experience in these cases and figured out a simple way to track the time. Would be appreciate any of your feedbacks or ideas.

    Welcome to the forums!

It would be easier to advise if you would provide a template file that you like and then explain how you would like it adapting. Nobody can help without knowing the basic layout of the data.

    Dear AliGW,
Thank you for your prompt reply, my pleasure to keep in touch with you here.
I tried to attach the file, but the function "Attachments" does not show anything.
Is there any other way i can post or attach files?
    Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

Thank you very much, i followed the process, please let me know if you receive and can see.
There is a starting date, a planned completion date (which are both insert manually) and then a 25%/50%/90% milestone planned dates, which represent the times i should complete the respective percentage of the project.
On the Green colored area, there are instead the real milestones dates: what i'm trying to do, is to have an overall indicator
that tells me whether the project is On Schedule or Delayed based on the real dates that i input once i complete the respective
    25% / 50% / 90%.
Not so sure if i explained properly, therefore if you have some questions, please let me know at any moment.
Thank you very much to you and anybody else that has suggestions or ideas on how to make this work.

Remove the placeholder text from cells J4 to M4, then copy this into N4:

    =IFERROR(IF(MAX(J4:L4)<=CHOOSE(COUNT(J4:L4),G4,H4,I4),"On Time","Delayed"),"")

Now start typing dates into cells J4 to L4 to test it.

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

    Dear AliGW,
How are you doing? Hope all good recently.
I further developing the excel sheet based on your formula, so far it has been very useful and the system work exactly
as i would like to. I found a small issue only in calculating the "Accumulated Delay" of the project: for example, once
your indicator tell me that the project is "Delayed", then i trying to have another indicator that tells me of
how many days the project is delayed. In this case i used the formula DATEDIF(...,...,"d")but i found that this one does not
work properly since i would like to have no value there if the project is on time or even earlier then expected.
I just wonder if you could provide any suggestion based on your experience?
Thank you very much in advance,

What should the start date be? There is a #REF! error in the workbook.

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

OK, sorry - you are going to have to provide a working sample file, not one that I have to fix before I can do anything with it. Also, merged cells are not a good idea - get rid of them and just make the rows wider instead.

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

    Dear AliGW,
Sorry i sent you the wrong file. Please find attached the correct one.
Basically the problem is that when i use DATEIF function, it works properly only if the resulting value is positive.
For the cells i tried to think about different solution but as we have 2 dates (first one is planned, second one is real)
i found quite difficult to make it in a different way. (i have also several products after Product 1, which will be listed
below. I absolutely agree with you that it would be great to find a solution where i can use single cells rather then
    merged one.

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

You should just add two extra columns for the planned and real dates, not rows - you need to maintain the data in normalised format, otherwise analysis later becomes tough.

    Having a look now ...

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

DATEDIF will not work if the first date is after the second, so use this instead:

    =(I4-I5)+(J4-J5)

Again, this layout is not good, not least because you are not going to be able to easily copy formulae down. Change it now before it is too late!

Thank you AliGW, i will do as you require as well as find out a better format to avoid having problems later in copying cells.
Thanks a lot for your support!! :-)

Re: Project Milestones Development Time tracking

    What answer requred in "F2"
As per my assumption you need as "2" or it may be 32
    Try with in "F2"
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

    [Because "J5" date is max.

    Otherwise
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

    Above for "2"

    For "32"
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.
