Add period/category on line chart

How to build this chart ?

i.e. i have data GDP of US from 1990-2017, i want to bold/highlight some periode which crisis happen.

i assume Excel 2016 is same as version i have
click on data point
then click again to get a single data point
(First click selects series...2nd selects single data point)

then right click that same data point and add label

Hello,

What aspect of the chart do you need help with?

If you have the data with dates and values, just insert a line chart.

If you want to highlight selected time frames, you will need to build a combination chart with an Area Chart for the color blocks and a line chart for the line. The sample chart you have posted is a horrible example, though. If you have some sample data, I'd be happy to help you work out something that does the job and also looks good.

Just let me know.
