Repeating x-axis for tracking running progress

Hi all, first time poster here.

I'm training for a marathon and I want to track my progress. I want 'month' to run along the x-axis, and for each month, I want a continuous sub-axis (does that exist?) which ranges from 5km to 42.195km. I want this continuous sub-axis (5km - 42.195km) to repeat for each month along the x-axis for a whole year. How do I do this? Side note: My y-axis will be on both sides. One side will show duration of run and the other will show average speed. Intended result of graph: To see a negatively trending slope with the bar graph (as my duration of run decreases per distance, and a line graph which should have a positive slope which should show my average speed per distance increasing.

    Thank you.

    Cal

Hi and welcome to the forum

I'm struggling to picture what this would look like.

Would you create some data in a wprkbook and sketch a chart of how you expect to see the data then upload the workbook and a scanned picture of the chart.

Hi Richard, thanks for your speedy response. Attached is the intended graph. I will create the data shortly and upload. Thanks, Cal.

I would appreciate any update at this point... Still trying to create this graph.

Re: Repeating x-axis for tracking running progress

Here's how I think I would do it (mostly just vague notions at this point, I haven't thought through all of the details):

    1) I think I would make the base of the chart an XY scatter chart with average speed/duration plotted against ANNUAL cumulative total. I would need a column to compute cumulative distance (=Previous cumulative + this entry's distance). Since you also want to show monthly cumulative, I would also add a column to compute monthly cumulative (=IF(same as previous month, previous cumulative+this entry, start over with just this entry))
    2) With the helper columns added, I would insert my base scatter chart.
    3) Using techniques like this "arbitrary axis" technique (where you add "dummy series" and label them to look like an axis https://peltiertech.com/reciprocal-chart-axis-scale/ ), add markers/lines to show the beginning of each month and to show the monthly cumulative totals.
    4) Keep or hide the main annual cumulative total values on the horizontal axis as desired.

I'm not sure how much you will be able to piece together from that. Starting place is to add the two cumulative total columns then create the main scatter chart.
