Grouped scatter plot with categorical (grouping) variable in x-axis?

Hi everyone, I have been searching for an answer to a problem I'm having for a few days now, but seems like no one has had a clear resolution for me. I'm trying to build a scatter plot in excel to describe change in 3 different conditions: before, after and 7months after change. These three timepoints should be my x-axis variables. I also need to connect the values measured from the same persons with a line. I will provide an example-image of an scatter plot i would need to create.

My y-axis variables are different numbers, that relate to this timepoints described above. I have no idea how can i build a scatter plot like this. If anyone can help me, I would be really glad! Thanks in advance! example.png

    Welcome to the Forum hubbari!

You would create a scatter chart with lines (a line chart might be more appropriate), using a different series for each person's data. We can help more if you attach the Excel file with your data. If it has people's names, remove the names. See the yellow banner at the top of the page.

(Your sample doesn't look quite right because the points are not perfectly vertically aligned over each x value, but I get the idea.)

Thank you for answering! Unfortunately I can't share the data because of data protection measurements, even if no one could interpret or identify the data :/

Actually, the data points are not perfectly vertically aligned because I want the data to be ''jittered'', so that the data points won't overlap with each other

I have tried to do it with scatter chart with lines and line chart, but I have not managed to get the x-axis to become categorical variable :/

I don't know what you intend to do with the chart, but showing "jittered" points defeats the purpose of data visualization and will show relationships differently than they really are.

Here is a sample file to make a chart like you showed here.

Re: Grouped scatter plot with categorical (grouping) variable in x-axis?

Thank you for answering and for the sheet! Actually, that is kinda a chart that I want to make, I think. I realized that I did not contain one crucial information (i'll post a picture). I actually want the data points of course to be connected from the same persons, but I want to show a progress of two different kind of tests and how the same people get different points from the two tests at different time points.

So basically the method is this = same person does 2 different tests. I want to graph there both tests in to same chart (so 1 person would have 2 lines, one line for test1 and one line for test2).

So the idea is to show the progress of scores from two different test methods in three different time points. The lines would show the progress of the one and same person. This is really hard to explain, I hope a bad picture I drew can help to illustrate my point.

Okay, I'll consider the usage of jittering Attachment 660701

Re: Grouped scatter plot with categorical (grouping) variable in x-axis?

I managed to find the answer by experimenting with various stuff.

First off, I managed to get only 2 different line series by first highlighting all the test 1 data points, and after that I created a scatter plot. I had previously highlighted only the values from only 1 subject at a time, which resulted in an enormous amounts of different line series.

I plotted the different categories before/after/7months after with numbers 1, 2 and 3. Then I just removed x-axis labels and gave the category names using simple text boxs... That solved all my problems.
