    Create collapsable fields without using pivot table?

    boss wants me to make a table similar to a pivot table where you have fields with totals in them, that can be expanded below to dropdown all of the sub-groups within them. however they said they've seen tables like this that didn't use pivot tables, so if you wanted to edit any of the cells you could just do it directly there. is there something like this in excel? i'm googling and can't find anything

    Use the outlining tools on the data ribbon: Subtotal and Grouping, Hide and Unhide details.
