Changing date format at bottom of graph

I've attached a screen shot that should explain this issue.

The date format at the bottom of my graph will not change in the format axis, it does however allow changes to the interval such as moving it to top or bottom. I've clicked and modified just about everything possible in that area but must be missing something.

    Any ideas would be welcomed.

    Thanks in advance!

Perhaps the dates in the table that is the source of the graph data are actually text values rather than proper dates (as Excel understands them). As you did not attach a sample Excel workbook it is difficult to confirm this (see yellow banner at top of screen).

Okay - I confirmed and modified all date fields and set them as the same format, you were correct the dates at the source were not formatted correctly.

However, it still does not accept the formatting change even after all changes to source data, pivot tables, and refreshing all charts. I've closed/reopened several times and repeated/validated but nothing takes effect

If you attached a sample Excel workbook, as I suggested, then we could suggest ways of solving the problem - we can't do anything with pictures.

I should have made the effort at the start, I've attached the file and ripped it down to a small number of records.

thanks for all suggestions so far....

Don't use entire columns for the source data range for the pivot tables.

Re: Changing date format at bottom of graph

At this point, all I can do is confirm that Excel won't allow me to change the number/date format on the horizontal axis of a pivot chart (either yours or one I make myself from a blank file). I also note that if I make a regular chart from the pivot table (https://peltiertech.com/regular-char...-pivot-tables/ ), I can then not only format the dates the way I want, but I can also use a real date axis where the dates are treated as dates and not text categories.

I'm not sure that I'm proposing a solution at this point, just verifying the problem.

How would you feel about using a regular chart instead of a pivot chart?

I updated your file using just the actual data rows. You can then format the run date pivot field and the chart will pick up that number formatting by default.

I read the article to the link (Peltier Tech) and didn't realize how restrictive pivot tables charts really are....I'm beginning to dislike them. That said, using a regular chart sounds like a better option or at least one to try for creating a historical view of the data. Currently, I run a weekly report from bus-objects and append the output into the rawdata tab and update the graph's. The only field that performs a calculation is the Average to 3rd so it seems as though this should doable.

It looks great - I can't say thank you enough for your help. I'm newer to the whole excel game and having a support group like this is a life saver when you're the lone ranger in the shop with nobody else to get help from....

Re: Changing date format at bottom of graph

Okay - I see the fixed dates and have tried recreating it in another tab with a pivot table & chart exactly as you have provided....I also see the dates are changed and they are connected to the source but trying to repeat this on another tab is not working for me. Perhaps I'm thick headed but can you list the steps/clicks to do this? I can hardly believe it's right in front of me and yet it still does not work. Forgive me for being a pain in the butt....

To change the format of the date field in the pivot table, right-click it and choose Field Settings. If you don't see a Number Format button at the bottom of the dialog, then your dates are not being seen as dates.
