Line chart - using non-linear dates?

    Hi all,

I have a simple two-axis line chart that I am using to display cycle-count results in a warehouse. The issue that I am seeing currently is the results are jumping all over the chart due to me using non-linear dates on the x-axis (I only cycle-count as time/days permit).

I have tried a few different format horizontal axis settings trying to find a solution to this one that will allow me to have dates in the x-axis that aren't linear and gives me a chart that looks better than what I currently see.

There may not be a solution to this, but I am hoping more experienced users will be able to give me one.
Thanks in advance to anyone who offers their help.

    Cheers

I'm not sure I understand what the concern is with "non-linear" dates or otherwise understand what you don't like about the charts you show in your pictures or what you want to be different.

As a wild guess, I wonder if you are wanting a text/category axis instead of a date axis (go into the format dialog for the horizontal axis and find the "date/text/auto" set of options and select the "text" option). See if that is closer to what you want.

If that isn't the solution, help us understand what is right and wrong with the chart. Perhaps upload an actual spreadsheet file (suitable desensitized) rather than a picture of the incorrect charts.

    Thanks MrShorty,

tried the Horizontal axis fix to text but it took me into territory that I haven't ever navigated. Baby steps with charts only for me for now.

I have uploaded the actual chart. Please take a look and I hope a fix can be found that allows me to tell a story to the viewer through irregular counts throughout the year.
You will see in the data that I tried adding "no counts today" and also played with the horizontal date ranges but both of those ideas didn't work.

Thanks again in advance for taking the time to look at this issue.
    Cheers

I don't see anything wrong with the chart as is. The chart begins at 100% on 8 Jan, then goes up and down in a sawtooth kind of pattern from there.

What would you like to see different in the chart? In what ways is the chart failing to "tell a story" to the viewer? What "story" do you want the viewers to be able to see?

Re: Line chart - using non-linear dates?

I think my question had two parts to it.

    1. Why did the line stop on 09-Feb? I have data in the table from the 20th onwards, but the line graph dates don't connect?
    2. And this discussion prompted me to reduce the horizontal axis range to three-months which improves the look of the graph. Thanks for helping me solve this part.

    Cheers

When I open your file, the line extends all the way to 22 Feb. I cannot explain why your picture shows the line stopping at 9 Feb. Perhaps something different between your Excel installation and mine?

As a debugging step, I might format the series to show lines and markers just so you can see all of the data points in the series even when Excel fails to connect them with a line. You can, obviously, remove the markers later after debugging.

Re: Line chart - using non-linear dates?

If you use the Select Data dialog and untick the show #N/A as empty cells the line will extend to the last value data point.

Your dates in row 25:34 are not in sequence.
