Help please with Excel pie chart problem

    Hi there,

1st time poster here. I have created a college timetable in Excel, merging cells to create a large enough space for descriptive text and colouring all cells which are common, for example, all "free time" periods are in one colour, all "study time" cells in another colour etc etc. I now need to create a pie chart from this data to show the proportion of time spent in each activity but I can't see how to do this.

Would anybody out there be kind enough to sort this problem out for me if I email you the file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    With thanks in advance,

    David

    Hi,

It is my understanding that Pie charts are created to represent the proportional contents of a range of cells, ie, from (say) A1:A10, show the proportions of each row of the total of those rows,

thus if A1 contains 10 and A2:A10 contain 2 each, then the slice allocated to 'A1' will be 10/28ths

For a new user, the answer to your qestion is that you need to enter the quantity of each 'colour' cell into a range, then chart that range (asin C5:F5).

For the more (VB) experienced user I would suggest that it is 'possible' to setup a macro 'Refresh Chart' to count, in a loop, the number of occurances of each nominated colour from the range (Rows and Columns) in your display, as per the button for A16:F16 in the attached, and set your pie chart from that range of counts.

    Does this help your thoughts?
