    Chart over time

I am trying to do a chart over time and expect there to be a really simple solution to this but I think it is a case of "easy when you know how".
I want to do a chart of distance (y axis) and time (x axis).

I am taking the data from journeys made on my bike, where my GPS gives me a list of points that compare distance travelled over time along the journey.

I want a chart where I can compare the progress of trips as a series of journeys (in the form of lines) against each other.

I believe it is an x/y scatter graph I need but the issue arises that the data for my journeys has no pattern. So the readings are not regular eg time is not at regular intervals or distance not at regular intervals. The number of points in each data series varies as well.

I need to create a graph that has a set x (time) and y (distance) axis and then I can plot the points of each data series (journey) to give me a line for each journey.

Please someone tell me this is easy..

    Hi,

Welcome to the forum! May be a column chart?

    Arrow

Each journey has a number of points for cumulated time and distance - so for example

    Journey 1

    Time Distance
    01:05 0.1
    02:35 0.3
    04:45 0.8

    Journey 2

    Time Distance
    01:35 0.2
    02:18 0.3
    04:05 0.7

I want to be able to plot the points of each journey on a time vs distance graph so that I end up with two lines - one for each journey. Then the progress of each journey can be visually compared.

the second graph displays the information in the fashion I am after, however you have used a regular distance spacing which I do not have.

I am using data from a gps device which is taken at seemingly random times - at the point it takes the data it gives values for time to date and distance to date, much as shown in the values given in my previous post.

The more I look around the web the more I am starting to think that this is not possible using Excel 2003 which is what I have. The only thing I have managed to dredge up is this for Excel 2007

    http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/...es-charts.aspx

I find it astonishing that a supposedly sophisticated piece of software cannot do a simple task like this. If I were doing it by hand all I would have to do is draw the two axis and then plot my points on - not really that hard is it....

I've sussed a work around where instead of using time as an axis as Excel cant handle it I have created another column where a formula converts time to seconds.

Using an xy scatter graph I can then plot distance against seconds.

To do the conversion ({time cell}*86400). Make sure the formula cell is formatted as a number. The 86400 comes from 24*60*60 (hr*min*sec)

    Hello again,

Had a search round myself and found this

    http://www.lacher.com/examples/lacher40.htm

I used that to come up with this - is that any better?

The attached chart does work to an extent but is again at given times. My data is such that there are so mant points at different times that it would be impractical to try and do it this way.

    Hi,

    I've sussed a work around
Sorry, didn't see that before I posted - glad to hear you sorted it out
