    Excel 2007 trendline

Does anyone know how to choose the correct trendline for a data set? I have plotted a data set in Excel 2007 but I don't know how to choose the correct trendline from the options Excel provides (see attached file).

    Consider the possibilities ...

It can't be polynomial -- those all run off to infinity at some point. Even Noah couldn't cope with that ...

Similarly, it can't be exponential or a power series -- those leaves us dead by dehydration or drowning eventually as well.

If linear isn't dead level, same result: dead.

    That leaves a moving average.

The answer to your question would depend on what you are trying to illustrate. For example if you were trying to show the impact of climate change hence drier summers, then a linear trendline would be the appropriate choice.

Also with regard to the moving point average, you may want to look at creating your own instead of using the built in ones as excel 'shifts' the average forward depending on your period length.
