    XY plotting

Hi I'm trying to create a xy plot with labels. The x and y values are locations, and each location has a name.
    Example

    X Y
    me 375 250
    bob 400 250
    camaro 425 250
    henry 490 250
    ford 375 300
    chevy 375 325
    dodge 375 370

I can't figure out how to plot the locations. I'd like to do a few things. Any help would be great..
I can just plot the locations, with ranges for x=370 thru 505 and y=245 thru 380

    1. label each location on the plot with the name and exact location
    2. caculate the distance between all locations, just assume that each unit=1. So location at 375,250 to 376,251 = 2 units
    3. same as #1 but range = x and y ranges are 0-500, and then same as 2, and 3

the labels and x y numbers can change, be added to and deleted from. So next time there will be and 8th line with mustang 410, 310
next time, mustang changes label to firebird, and bob is removed

    I've uploaded my attempt.

    thanks

    Re: XY plotting

You can create the labels using text from a cell.
This free addin will help link data labels to cells.
    http://www.appspro.com/Utilities/ChartLabeler.htm

The distance between points, using your definition, can be done by taking x1 from x2 with formula. This will calculate the horizontal/vertical distance between points. If you wanted to calculate the straight line distance you can do that with basic trig.

If you want to label the axis with specific values then you can do this by adding additional series and displaying the required value via a data label.

    Thanks Andy,
The attachment you have is what I was looking for. I installed the free addin before, but I don't know how to use it. Also I don't understand how you got the labels to work. I added another line, it showed up on the chart after I increased the vaules in the source data to include more rows, but the label didn't work and it's only showing the Y label.

    Re: XY plotting

When you install the addin a new menu item will appear at the end of the Tools menu.

If you select the series you want to link data labels for. Then Tools > XY Chart Labels > Add Chart Labels.

Now select the range with the required text.

The addin will only create links for points that currently exist. If you extend the series the new points will use the builtin values.

You can of course extend your series, apply labels and then reduce the series. You may well find the linkage remains. Deleting the series or data labels will probably break the links.
