    Creating a bar chart

I am trying to create a bar chart with a subset in Excel 2000.

For example, I want a bar that shows total growth in smart phone sales (50%) and company x’s growth is 31% of that 50%. The problem I am running into is that Excel add the two rows and show the main bar as 81%.

What I would like is that the main bar should be 50% and in that 31% should be the shaded area.

    Thanks.

See the attached. Essentially, I want Poland's total market penetration to be 70% and 30% as a subset. But in the chart, Excel adds 70% and 30% to make it 100%/

    Re: Creating a bar chart

Soooo, if the whole column should be 70 and the blue bit is 30, you need to subtract the 30 from the 70 to arrive at the correct value for the red bit.

In other words: Excel graphs only plot the data you give them. If you you want to show a whole that consists of two parts, then you'll have to give the chart the two parts, not the whole plus one part.

Subtract your series1 values from your series2 values in the data layout. Then plot the the resulting 30 and 40 (for Poland in your example) and the total column will have a height of 70.

    get it?
