Horizontal Guage Chart - how to?

I have been asked to replicate a chart for a report that I have to produce. I have attached a picture of what I need to achieve.

Is this possible in Excel? If so can somebody guide me through it?

    Thanks in advance.

you can do it using a xy-scatter. The markers are just standard markers, unless the direction of the triangle is suppose to impart some information.

The slide part could be additional series or error bars.

What actual data do you have?

    Andy,

I have attached some example data. What is needed are the MSFT values above the axis line with the others below. The direction of the triangle is just to point at the axis.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Andy,

Your a star. I would not have had any idea how to do that.

    Thanks

    Andy,

Just noticed if I have a lot of these they all go down in a line (one set of results on each line). Is it possible to keep them on the same line if they do not overlap?

    Sorry - everything gets complicated.

The vertical position of an item in the chart can be controlled via the Y value.

    Andy,

Thanks for all your help. I think I understand the chart except for one thing; How did you do the upside down triangle for the top value?

I can see that you had a shape drawn. How did you incorporate this into the chart?

    Sorry should have explained.

I used the autoshape as a custom marker. Create and format the shape as required.

in xl2003 and older you can use Copy shape, select series, paste.

in xl2007 you can use the same techinque but there is also now a 'Clipboard' button on the Marker Fill formatting dialog.
