    Question Charting Events over Time

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and a pretty good Excel user, just not proficient with graphs. I hope someone can help me figure how to graph events over time.
What I have is a spreadsheet that lists the times events occurred - I'd like to plot the events individually according to their times but also group them by shift. An example is below:

    Data I have
    Shift Time
    2P-10P 2:36 PM
    10P - 6A 10:17 PM

The graph I have in mind might look something like this:

    Time

    2:00 P
    X
    4:00 P

    6:00 P

    8:00 P

    10:00 P
    X
    12:00 A

    Shift 2-10 10P-6A

Is there a way to do this in excel? Or - is there a different way to chart this data that might be a better way to display it? What I'm attempting to show is how events are grouped at the beginning or end of shift (per the data I've collected).

Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide!

    What is the x-axis?

What is the y-axis? Is there more than one?

What kind of display do you want--bars, lines, scattered points?

Anyway, if you just want to look at data from different angles, you might be best served by pushing it into a pivot table, and then creating a pivot chart; that would probably be the fastest way to iterate through different display data.

    Re: Charting Events over Time

Thanks so much for your reponse! I would like a graph with scattered points connected by a line.
X axis should be elapsed time from 0 - 4 hours in 15 minute increments.
Y axis should be time (in hours/minutes) from 10:00PM through 6:AM in one hour increments.

I tried a pivot chart, but it doesn't provide the 'visual' that I'd like to show the audience. I'm attempting to demonstrate how data is input into a system all at once during a shift rather than sporadically. (Hope that makes sense).

I've been able to get my data into this chart but am having difficulty with the display of the x and y axis legends.

    Many thanks for your help!!
