How count the number of unique items in a column for use in a pivot table?

In my spreadsheet I have customers and sites and multiple ID numbers within each site.

In my pivot table it will tell me the total number of ID numbers but I want to the pivot to show me the count of how many are unique.

I have not figured out how to do this yet. It seems I will have to add a helper column to add to the pivot but I've not come up with the right formula yet.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you

I have found that this formula works to count unique items and the result can be used in my pivot table. However I think the use of this (SUMPRODUCT) formula on 17,000 rows us bringing my system to it's knees. Does anyone know a better way to add a "helper" column in the data to count unique items so then I can use that data element in my pivot?
