Having an issue with profit loss report

I am currently trying to figure out how to make a profit loss report it took me 2 days to get as far as I have but I would like to find out if I can use my monthly report to break down into weekly or if I have to set up the cells in a weekly fashion rather than monthly? I have the drop downs for the months and truck id numbers figured out already just more or less wondering if weekly calculations can only be done manually entering them or if excel has a way of doing this on its own. And if I did enter it manually the report list of data would be infinitely long I would assume as I have weekly reports coming in and would have to enter them in constantly on a monthly or weekly basis anyway. Or if anyone has an easier way of entering in the information so that pivot table would pick it up was kind of wondering how the external data thing works if I could link to a database and just have the info refreshed onto pivot from there? would be nice but again I have only been using excel for about 2 days and have prior experience with it so would appreciate any pointers

Re: Having an issue with profit loss report

    Hi,
As the data must be coming from an accounting system you can just grab the transactions directly from the ledger (or connect to the db possibly) and let the pivot table do all the summarisation. Demo attached..

Note 2 columns that will not be in the ledger data, one that just grabs the year/month part of the date to simplify grouping by month (there are other ways) .. and a column that multiples the P&L items by -1 so revenues are positive numbers, costs are negative and the total, in an ideal world, will be positive and be the income.

    good luck

    Steven

Thanks for the help but the company I work for would like a weekly report not monthly as the reports come in on a daily basis which I enter in one database seperate from accounting the idea of the worksheet with the table is to combine both databasis so they can be read easily now my other question is how would I set up the dates weekly? would I just use the beginning number of the week for each week to make the report filter for the date drop down or would it be the end of the week?
