Need Help with plotting a graph

I am trying to plot a graph (Scatter or Line Graph) for following type of data
1. Date (e.g. 15-May-2013) on horizontal X axis.
2. Software Version (e.g. 2.4.13, 0.60.3, etc) on vertical Y axis.

As the software version type is of text I am not able to get the correct plot.
Can anybody help me out with these please.

In order to chart you will need to plot numeric data. Therefore you need to assign some numeric value to each software version.

What exactly is the chart meant to show?

How can I assign the values?

Actually I am analyzing various open source softwares used in the various products like digital tv, camera, etc by our competitor.
This gives me an idea of development time/customization taken for each open source by our competitor.

You might be able to use a pivot table/chart

Or if you lay your data out correctly a Line chart. You will need to link version number labels to data labels to display all the information.
