Logarithmic graph scaling changes when changing minimum or maximum values for x axis

    Hello,

I have a logarithmic (log) graph that has a log base 10 scale

I'm copying and pasting the original graph on to itself, but shrinking the copied version.

So you have 1 mini graph on a regular sized graph. And you are able to see both.

on the mini graph, I want to showcase the line trends , by changing the minimum or maximum values of the x axis that are shown. ( causing a zooming effect)

but by doing that, the Log scale changes from 10 to another log scale in the mini graph.

Is there a way to change a log graph's min and max displayed values on the x-axis and still maintain log base 10?
I'm comparing the mini map and the regular map, and since they are using the same data points, I want the mini graph to have the same scale.

    Thanks in advance.

can you post example to illustrate values used in order to change log base.

    Here's some pictures.

in scale change: the mini graph was a copy paste of the larger graph, but I set the Minimum value to start at 4. I want the x axis scaling to be even with the original , which has a minimum value of 0.

in even crop: I cropped the mini graph to show the same even spacing as the larger, original graph.

although the graph is compressed, the 2nd graph has the same proportions of spacing between the original and the mini graphs.

using the graph in the scale change picture, the data values becomes distorted.

yeah, pictures don't really help much I can't see any of the properties of the charts. Maybe somebody else will be able to devine the problem from them.

Here's the properties for both graphs.

    Thanks for trying.

maybe I wasn't clear. Post example workbook.

whoops, so that's what you meant.

    Thanks again.

    recap.

    smaller graph: x axis value range : MIN=4, MAX=100

    larger graph: x axis value range : MIN=1 , MAX=300

I understand excel will scale down the graph if the ranges are smaller or if the graph is smaller, but I want both graphs to have the same equal spacing or scaled down spacing between points, if possible.

You may need to create you own log scale using normal values that are the result of LOG10 function.

Vertical gridlines are now Y-error bars.

Thanks Andy. What an interesting work around. Your method displays the vertical gridlines.

Do you mind explaining how you were able to plot those lines? i don't understand what y-error bars are, (and how to create them) and how you made certain x axis values display.

The vertical lines are Y-error bars with a set value of 300 (to match the Y axis Maximum value). Select the series and the use Layout > Error bars, to add error bars. You will need to delete the automatically added X-error bars. Select the Y-error bars and format No Cap and fixed value of 300.
