Issue with side-by-side column graph format

Hi all.
I've been trying to correct this issue with this side-by-side column graph for a couple hours but w/little luck.
The data is in date descending format though I've also put them in ascending order farther down in the spreadsheet, and w/no luck.
Essentially, the graph as I select the data appears as it is in the first graph which is what I want EXCEPT for the x axis labels. When I point to the dates in col A for the labels the bars "shrink" and for some reason it inserts other dates not in the date list into the axis. When I select format axis and select Base Unit >> fixed >> days it gets rid of the additional dates and it "fixes" the dates in the axis BUT I end up with very thin stacked bars instead of side-by-side bar columns.

If you look at the first graph you'll see what I want but with the dates as they appear in the second graph. Getting it corrected would be great BUT finding what I'm missing so I can correct it would be even better.

Format the horizontal axis as Text rather than Date.
Specify Interval Unit = 1 to see all axis labels
