Help with Excel and creating charts/graphs..?

I tried making charts, like pie charts and bar charts.
    Here is a screenshot.

What I want is to create a bar chart (E.g. in the screenshot I was trying to create a bar chart to show the total amount of each age group 16,17,18 etc...) What I did was highlighting row 1 and 2 then I went to insert, then clicked on bar graph. Then below is the graph which I got... it showed each age of each questionnaire, where I wanted to have total amount of 16 year olds, 17 year olds etc..

    ALSO

When I try to create a pie chart for like the total of M and F... I highlighted row 1 and 3 and did the same thing with insert > pie chart but nothing came out... it doesn't work or show anything. It doesn't read non numeric data? Nothing shows up.

    Please help me

    Thank you very much.

Is it the same method for excel 2010 as well a 2013?

If you post the spreadsheet itself then we can probably build what you want, but...

If you want to know "how" to build charts, then I'd start at theMS Office Documentation, and then go to google for "how to make bar charts" or whatever; Jon Peltier's website has a lot of good tutorials.

But if I had to give you one piece of general advice based on what I'm seeing from your post, it would be this:

I don't think you're organizing your data to feed your charts. Do that!

It's just like middle school math class: you need an independent variable and a dependent variable. Line them up nicely next to each other in a table and building charts becomes much easier! The most critical step in building a chart is getting the data correctly organized to feed the charter. By the time you click "insert Chart", as a rule, you should already have done at least 80% of the actual work needed to build the chart.

I did that. I got that sorted out.

But now I want to create a line graph with the amount of males and females...

Problem is that it doesn't read non numeric figures? So I counted up the amount of males and females.

    Did like:

What is your gender / Male / Female
    9 6

But nothing shows up when I pivot it and make it into a line graph?
