How to sort excel table (2010) not including total row?

If I create a table manually by highlighting a range of value and selecting Insert > Table, Excel will create a nice table for me and allow for great things like quick sorting. However, I have a total row in the table and when I sort the total row is sorted as well. How do I get Excel to sort everything in the table except the total row?

If you want to have a total row but still take full advantage of the autotable functions...

Delete the existing "totals" row, if it's treated as "just another row" in the table.

Select the table => Table Tools (special ribbon) => Table Style Options Tab => Click "Totals Row"

That will add an automatic totals row to the buttom. It defaults to only taking the SUM of the rightmost column, but you can activate others from the dropdown box.

Ever thought about putting the totals above the table?
Traditional paper tables have totals at the bottom but why put totals at the bottom of a spreadsheet?

Having totals at the top mean that you can freeze the headers and still see the totals wherever you are in the table. You don't have to scroll to the bottom of a table to see the totals. You don't have to move the totals down a few more rows when you want to add more rows to the table.

To me it just makes so much more sense to put totals at the top.

I must admit to years and years of trying to cope with totals at the bottom of a range. Moving the total row down when I want to add new rows, scrolling to the bottom of the range just to look at the totals, printing off multiple pages when all I wanted to see was the total. Named ranges for totals are simple and fixed from the start.

When I stopped all this and put the totals at the top it was a big revelation and re-evaluation of all the sheets I had compiled to date.

Such a simple idea, but Oh so powerful.
