VLOOKUP return value based on text in cell

SHEET1 [Column A] contains my old part numbers. The part numbers begin with either “D” or “E”

SHEET2 is a cross reference table
SHEET2 [Column A] contains my old part numbers
SHEET2 [Column B] contains my new part numbers that BEGIN with “D”
SHEET2 [Column C] contains my new part numbers that BEGIN with “E”

If Old Part Number begins with “D” VLOOKUP using SHEET1 [Column B] and place in SHEET1 [Column B]
If Old Part Number begins with “E” VLOOKUP using SHEET2 [Column C] and place in SHEET1 [Column B]

Thanks Richard.. I wasn't sure what approach to use.. I was going between IF() and INDIRECT but couldnt figure out how to get the syntax right with either.
