    Counting Names from a list

Hi. I would like to count the number of time a name occurs in a range. I tried using a simple pivot table but it did not work because I may not always use all of the names from the list. Also I would like to avoid using the count if formula if possible. Is there a way to use a pivot table to do this?

If you want to do it with the help of a formula, pls see the attached sheet.
In the cell D4, place the formula given below and drag down to get the unique names from the list.

and in E4, try this formula to get the count

Re: Counting Names from a list

Thanks for the answers. This isn't quite what I am looking for. Sntneer your answer was closest, but I would like for any unused names to have a count of 0. For example, I have 14 names on the volunteer list on sheet2, and on sheet1 one I have them scheduled under may 4th, if I put 15 names, but use some twice and some not at all, I would like the count to reflect that. Also I will eventually multiple dates. I have attached a spread sheet where I manually put in the values the way I would like for them to appear on Sheet2. I have
separate sheets because I was using sheet1 as source data for a drop down list. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Counting Names from a list

That definitely gave the desired result. Is there any way to make this into a pivot table of some sort? I would eventually add more days, May 4th, May 11th, etc, and I would want the same data results. Also, I would be adding and subtracting names as time goes on. Would there be any way to build this to minimize changes in the future? Basically I am wanting a spread sheet to produce the data desired from my previous post with the flexibility to add more dates and different numbers of volunteers. Thanks for the help.

Re: Counting Names from a list

    Thanks for the feedback.
Sorry mate, I am not good in pivot table, in fact I don't use it, though it is very convenient and easy to use. May be another forum member would be able to help you regarding this.

Though this can also be done with the formula itself, but it depends on the sheet layout and how do you want to count volunteers for each day or for a selected day. It depends.
