    A quick question about COUNTIF

    Hello,

I'm happy to find this place. I just have a quick question about using the Countif formula.

I have a spreadsheet that identifies a location by a specific color and while trying to calculate the number of times the red, yellow, or blue is listed I've been using the Countif.

The problem I'm facing now is that because the colors are a data validation drop down list, any updates or additions to the spreadsheet does not calculate automatically and I cant understand why.

This is my formula =Countif(B2:B20, "Red"), then under that I use it again to calculate the blue, =Countif(B2:B20, "Blue") etc

It adds up how many times the column has the text "red" , "blue" but if I try to insert a row or change the drop down menu to a different color it does not calculate it automatically, unless I go back down to the formula, click it and hit enter.

Please tell me what I am missing here? It seems like it would be a simple straightforward formula?

I'm still very much of a beginner excel user, and I'm sorry if this was asked somewhere else.

    Thank you

Re: A quick question about COUNTIF

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Stating the obvious I know, but are you sure Calculation is set to Automatic? The calculation setting is at the Application level not the Workbook level.

It sometimes happens that if the very first workbook you open in a new Excel Application instance is set to Manual, it means that all subsequent workbooks will also be affected until you reset the Application.
