Formula to calculate the school grade of a child based on their birthday

Greetings All! New member here who works with ESL students who are new to the School District I work in. I have an average understanding with excel formulas so I need some help please.

When speaking with parents I want them to enter in their child's birthday i.e. 12/1/1998 in one cell and then automatically generate what grade they should be in the next cell. If the grade year cutoff date is Sept 1. Any thoughts?

Probably best to use a lookup table that contains the Grade and the minimum age for each.

You haven't provided a lot of detail about the grade system (not everyone knows the details of the school system where you live) so I have made the assumption that they are supposed to start grade one on their 5th birthday. Adjust the formula (the numbers subtracted at the end of each section) if that assumption is wrong.

How would you adjust the formula if you used whatever the child's age was on 10/31 to determine their grade level? So, a child who was 5 as of 10/31/15 would be in kindergarten.

Again, you still haven't given a lot of detail about the schooling system that you are referring to,so from the information you have given I have made the assumption that children start Grade 1 on 1 November if they turned 5 in the 12 months preceding that date. So if a child turns 5 on 31 October 2016 they will start grade one the next day, on 1 November 2016, but if their birthday is 1 November they wont start until 1 November 2017.

Try this formula in that instance
