I am using a simple SUM formula like this, =SUM(D10:E10). I would like for the SUM cell to be left blank until a value is entered into the cells D10. Currently it calculates the SUM as 0.

For what purpose?
You can try changing the cell formatting to get rid of the 0, or show a "-"
or you can write an if statement, but it seems kinda awkward.

Assumes D10 and E10 will only contain numbers.

How do I change the cell formatting to get rid of the 0 or show a "-"?
=if(d10="","-",d10+e10)
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

I appreciate all of the help. The ideas work but it's very cumbersome. I was just hoping for an easier way. It just seems that if there is nothing in the reference cells, the formula cell should also remain blank until something in entered into the reference cells. Thanks for all the help.
just format the cell as accounting no symbol

maybe it needs tweaking to avoid 0.00?
Well, I think it will show 0.00 if you only show 2 decimal places but have something like 0.001 ... but, in reality, it's not a zero value. So maybe it should show something other than "-"?
