Need help with searching and looking up.

I want to make a spreadsheet that will automatically show who is scheduled for which position on what day of the week.
I tried some kind of search function to check an entire column for keywords like "dish" and then return the cell in the adjacent column, but no luck.

Example of how a schedule would be set up
    Monday Tuesday Wednesday
John dish off off off off off
Jill off dish off off off off
Ben off off dish off off off
Bob off off off dish off off
Ken off off off off off dish
Damon off off off off off off

Example of how I want it to search for who is in what position.
    Monday
    Dish: John

    Tuesday
    Dish: Jill

Re: Need help with searching and looking up.

    Please can someone help me with a formula as follows;

I have multiple rows and multiple columns, the first row reads something like this

    A B C D E F G H
    Concentrates Minerals Concentrates Soya 21 10 11 2

And so on down the rows,
Column A volume is in Column E
Column B volume is in Column F and so on,

I would like to find the total of all concentrates in columns E-H, i.e E + G = 32 and post it in column I, and then the same for minerals and soya but put those results in column J & K.
This is a simpler example, I have 22 columns of text and then a further 22 columns of corresponding numeric.
Please help, Thank you very much
