SOLVED:Expressing the number of digits in a cell's value

Hi;
Cell A1 contains data that is retrieved from another location using VLOOKUP.

The data in Cell A1 will be concatenated with other text in multiple places throughout my workbook.

A1 is formatted as a 4 digit number (i.e., 0001-9999). There will be instances where I need to use it just as it's formatted.

There are other instances where I need to use the value in that cell without the leading zeroes (i.e., 1-9999).

I have tried several IF(AND) formulas, but I am having no success. Any suggestions?
