    Count number of same type of text in a data range

    Count number of same type of text in a data range

    i have a number of town names, each has a few entries in a column. I need to count how many is there per each town entry.
    I tried number of unique entries but that return only number of town which i already knew.
    So town names are rugby, coventry and birmingham for example.(except 100's of the entries of different town names) i need the number of entries for rugby, for coventry ....etc

    Use a Pivot Table, drag the Name column to Row Area, and drag the same column to Summation area. Should give a unique list with a count of each.

    Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

    Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

    Are you talking about the areas in pivot table settings? sorry not too familiar with terms in excel

    See attached.

    First I went to a cell in the range, then went to Insert|Pivot Table..

    Selected to put the table in the active sheet, then click Ok.

    Then in right pane, dragged the town to the Row area, and again in the summation area.
