    conditional formatting

    Hi Everyone

I was wondering if you could help me. I have two columns of dates (AD and AE) I want to be able to turn the AD dates red if the AE date at the side of it is less than the AD date. Now I can do this on two cells side by side, but when I want to apply it to the full two columns its not working correctly. any ideas would be great.

    thank you
    Julie

    Hi

if you could attach your sheet it would help however I have a feeling all you need to do is remove the $'s from the conditional formula so it drags down correctly

    Re: conditional formatting

    Select AD1

    Conditional Formatting
    New Rule
    Use a formula to determine...

    =(AE1 < AD1)

    format as required
Use Format painter (paintbrush icon) to copy to other cells

If these doesnt work you need to get Excel to check they are in fact dates.

    Re: conditional formatting

    Hi,

What's the CF you are using? The cell refs need to be relative and then applied to the whole range in Q. i.e.

    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Re: conditional formatting

Not necessarily a good idea to apply formatting or Conditional Formatting to entire columns.

    CF Formula:
    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Re: conditional formatting

    Hi guys
it works when only using two cells side by side, but applying it to the two full columns does'nt. In fact all it does is copy it down

    thank you anyway

    Re: conditional formatting

what I want to do is basically if AD8<AE8 then colour the date red. Now it will do this for one set of cells, but when I try to copy this down it either copies the first two dates all the way down OR does not turn the dates red that should be turned red. I am finding this so frustrating ha ha

    thank you

That's not what you said at the beginning...

Decide what way round you want the condition to be

You also have MULTIPLE conditional formats set on those cells.
Delete all the multiple conditions and just add one condition:

    Select AD1

    Conditional Formatting
    New Rule
    Use a formula to determine...

    =(AE1 < AD1)
(Amend if required as stated above)

    format as required
Use Format painter (paintbrush icon) to copy to other cells

    Re: conditional formatting

As has been said, you have reversed the requirement.

Whatever, see your updated sample workbook. You need to select all the cells from AD2 down to AD223 and use the formula:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.
    or
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.
if you want to highlight both cells.

Note that you need to make the column references absolute.
