Formula - Find duplicate concatenated characters in single cell

Hi Folks,

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how to count duplicates among concatenated characters within a single cell.

An example would be:

This however indexes all of A and counts the duplicates amongst the entire array instead of returning individual results for each neighboring row.

I need a formula that will translate well to Google Spreadsheets as well.

Any ideas??
